What is Futures Plus
Future Roots has been funded by The John Lewis Foundation to identify work opportunities for young people aged 16 to 20 years who have missed out on their education through troubled life circumstances.
We are currently working with up to 10 young people and 10 employers who are willing to give young people the opportunity to learn in their work setting with support from their mentor alongside.
We are particularly interested to hear from organisations that link to Agriculture, Horticulture Catering and Care who would give young people work experience opportunities that would be supported by a mentor.
The Project
The Futures Plus programme has been funded by The John Lewis Foundation. The project is set up wo work with for young people aged 16 to 20 years who have missed out on their education through either poor mental health or behaviour, or where poverty is highlighted, or if Covid has had a detrimental impact. As part of the project, we will have a video produced to use as a promotional tool, aiming to show the positive impact the project has had on the young people, and encouraging/showing the benefits of working within agriculture or others fields in rural Dorset.
Aims of the project
The project will help 10 young people transition into college or work, help young people attend interviews, identify work experience placements and potential employers, C.V, Short Certificates and training. The main part of the work is to engage and support young people into further education and/employment, with a focus on agriculture, catering, care, horticulture and other rural employment.
Future Roots
The main intervention for Future Roots is around work-related mentoring and opportunities for tasters into the work environment, fully focussed on their future, work skills and qualities like turning up on time, being organised, wearing suitable clothes, writing a C.V and gaining additional qualifications.
Work Experience
Over the course of the project our young people will take part in work placements. We have flexibility to work with the employer to ensure they have a positive experience from the Young People from Future roots. Work Experience can run for up to 6 weeks and supported by mentor from Future Roots if required by either the employer or the young person. When a young person is under 18 the mentor will risk assess the environment and work alongside the young person. With the parent’s agreement should a young person want to attend more sessions at the work placements this can be possible but we would not be responsible for those days at work. A contract will be drawn up between the employer and young person that the parent will have agreed to.
