Burning the candle at both ends

What do you feel like with no sleep?

When I was a young’un (I’m now in my prime of course) I could party all night then be up and ready for the morning fun without feeling ruff! But I just can’t do it with the same enthusiasm now; I put my nose out of the door, feel the frost then run for the sofa. I come downstairs with the intention of catching a rat or seeing off a fox, while the boss checks for newborns, but in the last two weeks I haven’t made it outside.

Every night we have needed to get up every four hours to check cows, calves, sheep and lambs. We now have five lambs and two calves on the farm. I know there is more to come because we were up again last night. But my lack of sleep means I end up staying in the house, wide awake, alert and waiting for the boss to return just in case something happens. During these moments I took to thinking about the other man in my boss’s life: he stays sound asleep while she is down on the farm in the cold. I don’t think a dog would act that way, but then people seem strange to me sometimes. I think I will lick his face to wake him up next time. I’m pretty sure that would get him out of bed, as he is quick to avoid me when I try to wash his face at other times. So ungrateful…
