High quality day opportunities for adults with learning disabilities, including those with more complex needs.
Whitfield is a purpose-built gardening and skills centre that provides day services for adults with autism and learning disabilities. Run by Future Roots, we are situated in the Dorset countryside, just one mile from Dorchester town centre.
Set within 4 acres, Whitfield has two large greenhouses, polytunnels, fruit cages, and allotments. The outdoor areas provide plenty of space for people to relax and enjoy the fresh air. Inside, the centre has an arts and crafts room, pottery and kiln, woodwork shop, a spacious semi-commercial training kitchen, and a large multi-purpose room.
Participants learn new skills in horticulture, how to prepare healthy food using fresh ingredients that they have harvested themselves, and crafts such as willow weaving, felting and pottery. Through this, they learn to work as a team, build their confidence, and have fun!
Groups are small so that we can respond to individual needs and interests. In most cases up to five clients will be supported by each staff member. Our staff ensure that each person reaches their potential in a supportive and therapeutic environment.
We have experience of working with adults with more challenging behaviour. This is often on a one-to-one basis and is arranged on a case-by-case basis.
Most of our activities are enterprise-based, so there is a real sense of purpose and achievement. We offer the following activities throughout the year:
- Arts and crafts
Activities are currently accredited by the John Muir Award. We will be offering additional accredited units as the service develops.
